Zebbug two points away from championship glory

Wednesday, 5th May 2004, at 4.45pm leaders Zebbug Rovers FC played against bottom placed Xewkija Tigers FC, the third round match 1st Division League. Xewkija opened the first half with the strong wind behind them.  Zebbug controlled thier opponents during this period.  The first forty five minutes were very balanced with the two sets of defenders leaving little space to the strikers.  For the second period Zebbug were more offensive and after losing good chances of scores they secured the three points with three goals, two by Eboh and one by Mahjoub.  Zebbug now opened a five point lead on Champions Nadur with just two matches to play, one of them the direct clash between the two.  Therefore Zebbug are two points far from the first championship in their history!  Referee of the match was Mr Anton Zammit and his assistents were Mr Paul Apap and Mr Mario Apap.

Zebbug opened on the offense and had crosses by Taouli and Cordina cleared by Xewkija defense.  The match was very balanced and on the 23rd minute Rais free kick was well concluded by Bugeja but Xuereb blocked to a corner.  On the other end Taouli's cross was blocked in time by Xewkija defense.  Mark Camilleri went close by a strong shot which went over the bar.  Xewkija went close again by Sabri's free kick which went just wide.  Three minutes from break, Zebbug went
close by Eboh, who dribbled the goalie but incredibly shot wide instead in the
empty net.

With the wind behind them Zebbug were more aggressive in the second period.  On the 3rd minute Taouli's cross shot went just wide.  Minutes later Eboh's shot was blocked to a corner by Rais.  On the 5th minute Taouli shot wide and two minutes later Agius saved on Leandro.  Zebbug were dominant in these moments and had more chances by Leandro, Cordina, Galea and Taouli.  On the 32nd minute Taouli passed to John Eboh who fired a shot to the angle of the net to give
Zebbug the lead.

Xewkija could have leveled the score as Farrugia missed the target from an ideal position.  But Zebbug doubled the score on the 37th minute.  Galea passed to Mahjoub Taouli who scored the second goal of the match.  Xewkija were demorolized by this goal and it was Zebbug that scored again just before the final whistle as Eboh first shot was saved by Agius helped by the post and from the rebound he netted his second goal to go on top of the top scorers list with
14 goals.
