Zebbug Rovers opened a five point lead at the top Sunday, 11th April 2004, at the Gozo Stadium, 4.00pm, Zebbug Rovers played against Sannat Lions FC, the third round match of the Easyline GFA 1st Division League. Zebbug won three important points in their race for the title and opened a five point lead on Nadur. Our Rovers were more offensive in the first half and scored two times. The Rovers were solid at the back and by counter attacks in the second half scored another two goals to secure their three points. Referee of the match was Mr Reno Refalo and his assistants were Mr George Portelli and Mr Paul Apap. Zebbug went close to open the score on the third minute when by a direct free kick Touali hit the bar. Sannat replied by another free kick by Cristiano which went over the bar. On the 11th minute from a free kick Touali fired to the back of the net to open the score. One minute later Zebbug went close to double. Another free kick by Touali, passed to the other side of the ground to Cordina who crossed the ball and Sylvan Galea headed in but Paul Galea saved. On the 24th minute Touali had another free kick shortly cleared by Sannat defense and Patrick Camilleri’s shot was saved by Galea. Three minutes later Leandro’s shot from just outside the box was saved by Galea. On the 31st minute Eboh persisted with the ball but as defense cleared to Leandro’s direction with the Brazilian firing another shot which went over the bar. On the 37th minute Cardona’s cross was concluded to the back of the net by Sylvan Galea after Sannat defenders missed to clear the ball. One minute later Zebbug went close again as Cardona crossed the ball, Sylvan’s header was punched by Galea and from the reound Leandro’s strong shot from few yards was saved again by Galea. 43rd minute the Lions went close as Lautier crossed to Mark Formosa who concluded just wide. One minute before half time Cristiano’s free kick went wide. Three minutes in the injury time Sannat narrowed the gap. Cristiano long free kick to Mark Formosa was perfect, Formosa crossed the ball and Conti concluded but his shot was blocked by Zebbug defense and Lautier was quick enough to fire to the back of the net. Sannat went immediately on the offense in the second half. On the second minute Conti’s shot went just wide. One minute later Cristiano went close by a free kick. On the other end of the pitch Galea’s shot went wide. On the 9th minute Conti’s corner was headed in by Lautier but Xuereb saved well and two minutes later Formosa went close again by another shot. On the 12th minute Attard crossed the ball and first Conti’s shot and than Lautier’s shot were blocked and finally Sandro Azzopardi’s shot went just over the bar. On the 16th minute Conti’s corner was saved by difficulty by Xuereb. On the 18th minute Shaun Attard was shown the red card. On the 20th minute they went close by a free kick of Sandro Azzopardi which was headed in by Cristiano but well saved by Xuereb. One minute later on the other end of the pitch Zebbug protested for a penalty. On the 23rd minute John Vella’s free kick was headed in by Formosa but Xuereb saved again. On the 28th minute Zebbug could have scored their third goal as on a counter attack Eboh hit the post. But the goal did come one minute later as Leandro’s cross was controlled by Sylvan and back passed to Touali who concluded in the net. On the 33rd minute the Lions tried to narrow the gap as Lautier passed back to Conti but his shot was blocked by our defense. Three minutes later Vella’s free kick was headed just wide by Abdul. Two minutes from time Zebbug secured their three points with another goal by Eboh who have received a perfect through pass by Leandro.
